Lorry Mounted Crane FAQs

Everything You Need to Know Before Your HIAB Training.

Do I need a licence before starting HIAB training?

Not in most cases - your standard LGV licence covers the driving side, but crane operation is a separate skill that requires accredited training. A HIAB training certificate proves you’re competent and compliant with LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations). Many employers will not allow you to operate without one.

How long does the training take for different experience levels?

For experienced operators needing a refresher, training can be completed in one day. New or inexperienced operators typically require a two-day course, which allows for in depth practical learning, multiple lift scenarios and safety drills. This extra time ensures you can operate confidently in varied working environments.

Will I learn brick grab attachments?

Yes, our training covers multiple attachments so you’re equipped for all scenarios and stock. We’ll train you on hook, clamshell bucket and brick grab usage where applicable, so you understand the limitations, safe working loads and best practice for each.

Can this training be carried out at my workplace?

Yes, if your site meets the requirements and has suitable equipment available. On site training can be tailored to your exact working environment, which is more relevant than a generic test area. This is particularly useful for companies training multiple staff.

Does my HIAB certificate expire?

Yes, every 5 years. Typically, refresher training is recommended every 3-5 years to ensure compliance with health and safety standards and to maintain competence. This also helps you keep up to date with any changes in regulations or equipment technology.
