What Is Driver CPC and How Does It Work?

If you drive a lorry, bus or minibus professionally, you’ll need to stay up to date with Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) training. You must complete 35 hours of training every 5 years, usually made up of five 7 hour modules. It’s a legal requirement and it helps keep you and others safe on the road.
How It’s Delivered
Training is usually in one 7 hour session or two 3.5 hour sessions (over consecutive days for International CPC).
Track Your Progress
Your training hours are logged with the DVSA and you can view them online at any time.

Commonly Asked CPC Questions
Find answers to your CPC questions.
Since late 2024, there are two Driver CPC pathways: International Driver CPC is for drivers working both in the UK and overseas. It requires 35 hours of classroom based training over 5 years in full 7 hour modules or if split will have to be completed over two consecutive days. Up to 12 hours of approved e-learning can count towards your 35-hour total.
National Driver CPC is a UK only option: this is a more flexible option for national only drivers, where split sessions don't need to be done over consecutive days. Certain courses are only half a day and some fully online, with the same allotted amount of 12 hours of e-learning can go towards your 5 year total.
Yes - from early 2025, if your Driver CPC has lapsed between 60 days and 2 years, you can take a ‘Return to Driving’ module. That lets you legally resume commercial driving in the UK immediately, provided you complete the remaining 28 hours within 12 months.
Definitely. You’re free to attend training from multiple DVSA approved centres as long as your hours are logged correctly, they all count toward your 35 hour total.
You can't do the same modules within a five year period even if they are at different locations/by a different provider - you must make sure you aren't repeating modules as this won't count towards your training.
Yes - by law, CPC sessions count as working hours if your employer schedules them for you. This is covered under the UK’s Working Time Regulations.
Yes, even drivers who passed their LGV licence before Sept 2009 or PCV before Sept 2008 (under ‘grandfather rights’) now require periodic Driver CPC training (35 hours every 5 years) to maintain their qualification.
