Category C+E Licence FAQs

We’ve compiled the most common questions from learner lorry drivers.

How can I go straight to C+E without doing Class C first?

You can train directly for your C+E licence from a standard Category B car licence, since changes in 2021. That said, opting to start with Class C can boost your confidence and shorten overall training if you're new to HGV driving. If you want to make the jump straight away, we're more than happy to help you get your experience level up to pass confidently and be safe on the roads.

Do I need to retake the theory and hazard perception tests with a C1/C licence?

Yes. If you're progressing to a C+E licence, you'll need to retake both your Module 1 Theory and Hazard Perception tests - even if you’ve passed them before for a C1 or C licence. This is because each category upgrade requires fresh theory qualifications unless taken within the same application window. We recommend booking your Module 1A and 1B tests as early as possible to avoid delays in starting practical training.

What does the coupling and uncoupling test involve in C+E training?

This tests your ability to safely park on level ground, attach and detach the trailer, ensuring proper connection, performing the snatch test and checking all safety systems. It’s both a skill and a legal requirement. You'll be trained properly how to set up and safely perform this under the guidelines of HSE and IRTE.

What is the typical C+E training duration?

- 4-5+ days if you're upgrading from C1 and C
- 8-10 days if you're starting from a car licence

You'll train in 4 hour blocks, complemented by your test.

What’s the earning potential with a C+E licence?

Qualified Class 1 drivers earn competitive wages. Industry figures show average annual salaries ranging from £37k to £43k, with experienced drivers earning even more.

How often do I need a medical once I hold a C+E licence?

Once your licence is issued, you must renew your HGV medical every 5 years (or at 45 and 65 years of age, additional intervals apply as per DVLA rules). Plus, don't forget your 35 hour CPC training every 5 years to keep your card valid.
